COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO: World Cultural Heritage (Dec. 1995)

Founded in 1680 by Master Manuel Lobo, Colonia was the first Portuguese settlement in our territory.

Separated from Buenos Aires by the River de la Plata and only 177 kms from Montevideo, this city takes us more than 300 years back in the history of the country, just by walking along its narrow cobblestone streets or looking at its stone houses with thatched roofs, where damp walls witnessed the bloody fights of Spaniards and Portuguese for the domain of this strategic point. The longest period of Portuguese domination goes from 1715 to 1777 and it was at this time that Colonia showed its grandeur to the world. The first artisans of Buenos Aires were born here and so was the first theater play in the region.

When the sun sets, the yellow lanterns on the doors light up and create an atmosphere of romance and nostalgia in the famous Callejón de los Suspiros (Alley of Sighs) with its picturesque flowers decorating window sills. Next to the Bastion de San Miguel rises the Lighthouse, dressed like a bride, faithful lifeguard in the old Colonia, built right over the foundations of a burned Franciscan Nunnery (1683).

Some of the places which are well worth a visit are the Old Gate, the Museums of Portuguese and Spanish Periods, the Paleontologic Museum and the Indian Museum as well as the Cathedral and the Mihanovich Complex with its bullring of Moorish architecture.

As you go on strolling at your own pace, the golden threads of the sun knit poetry, playing over the river and the faded roofs of the houses which suggest peace and relaxation.
